Reliable Multicasting in the Internet: Experience with the IRMA Architecture

چکیده
In this paper, we present our experience with the IRMA reliable multicast architecture. IRMA guarantees reliable, sequenced, and loosely synchronized delivery of multicast streams by supporting TCP as the multicast transport protocol at the end hosts without modifications to the standard TCP/IP stack. To support TCP as the multicast transport protocol, IRMA provides ACK aggregation, local recovery, and network level support for TCP flow/congestion control. We describe an implementation of IRMA, and evaluate its performance in a real network as well as in a simulation environment. The performance result of IRMA indicates that it may be a viable architecture for proving reliable multicast in the Internet.

IRMA: A Reliable Multicast Architecture for the Internet
IRMA is a reliable multicast architecture that guarantees reliable, sequenced, and loosely synchronized delivery of multicast streams. IRMA provides ACK-based reliability, hybrid local server-initiated and sender-initiated loss recovery, and support for end-to-end flow control and congestion control. Unlike most contemporary work, IRMA supports TCP as the reliable multicast transport protocol a...
متن کاملIRMA : A New Reliable Multicast Architecture for theInternetKang
In this paper, we propose a scalable reliable multicast architecture called IRMA which guarantees reliable, sequenced, and loosely synchronized delivery of multicast streams. The IRMA architecture uses ACK-based reliability, a hybrid local server-initiated and sender-initiated loss recovery, and only local state, and provides support for end-to-end ow control and congestion control. In a radica...

The IP multicast architecture enabled large-scale applications of multicasting on the Internet. Many of these applications require reliable dissemination of a stream of data (e.g., software distribution or stock updates) to a large number of receivers. They face, however, a scaling limitation, known as the feedback implosion problem: the sender is overwhelmed by feedback packets, leading to pac...
